Winter Running by Cathy Williams

Just wanted to share my love of winter running with everyone. Yesterday the windchill in Indianapolis was minus 26 degrees. I have been trying to convince my running partner how wonderful it is to brave the conditions and venture out into the frozen winter world, hearing each footstrike with clarity and conviction telling you that nothing will stop you or discourage you from your training. My running partner has always considered me a radical in thinking when it comes to my running anyway, not to mention, running in winter. However, as he and I were running in sleet and wind the other evening, we were alone with the world, we had the entire greenway to ourselves, the sleet keeping a consistent beat on our jackets as we ran through the freshly fallen snow. He wanted to pause briefly on a bridge that overlooked a river flanked by trees, ice covered in places, with minimal wildlife attempting to take refuge. Other than the sleet, the silence was deafening. He looked at me and said "This really is very cool." He made me smile that evening.

You see, my running partner is totally blind and this was his first adventure run in extreme conditions. What a thrill, what a wonderful memory to think back on, and what an inspirational story to share with others. Now, if I may, I'd like to offer this little pearl of wisdom ....if you are a runner that has qualms about going out in these conditions .... think of my partner ... find a park or a path that is not well traveled, open your eyes and see and absorb all the wonders and sights that winter can offer you and enjoy the moment. God is good!

Safe running
